The Skotti Grill

Watch in 4k

Here it is, the Skotti Grill. Very difficult to get a hold of, but a joy to use up in the mountains. I hiked up a different route to the campsite that ended up being much steeper, but as usual I made it up there huffing and puffing all the while.

The Skotti grill is a “backpacking” grill that can break down quite small and fit into a slim waterproof case. It's made of stainless steel plates that are cut to fit into each other forming a rectangle shape, with a gas burner and grill grate. It runs off isobutane, and performs exactly like a more expensive propane grill. You can probably run this off of propane if you get an appropriate adapter, but I still haven’t ordered one.

It’s been a dream of mine to grill up in the mountains, and it finally came true. Using the Skotti grill I grilled up a nice ribeye steak with kimchee sausages, tomatoes, onions, shiitake mushrooms with garlic and a hot pot of jasmine rice. Best BBQ plate on the Koʻolau summit ridge. It’s not easy to grill up a BBQ feast like this when you’re mountain camping, but the Skotti grill makes it possible.

It’s not exactly light, I think my pack was close to 50lbs, but it’s doable. It performed really well for what it is, but don’t be expecting the same results of charcoal grilling. Either way, I’m excited for another chance to use this grill. I probably won’t take the steepest route up the mountain next time. Full grill review will be coming soon.

Another solid hike/camp/cook in the books. If you haven’t watched the video go ahead and scroll back up and do that now, it’s pretty epic.
